“So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts.”
In plain words: The job in front of Zerubbabel would not be finished by human strength or force. It would be finished by God's own Spirit.
What Zechariah 4:6 means.
Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord. Real strength comes from God’s Spirit, not your own push.
Common questions about Zechariah 4:6
Who was Zerubbabel, and why did he need to hear this?
Zerubbabel was a leader of God's people about 500 years before Jesus. The people had just come home after years as captives in Babylon. His job was to rebuild God's house, the temple, in Jerusalem. The work was hard, the people were few and tired, and enemies tried to stop them (Ezra 4). So God sent this message through the prophet Zechariah: the work would not depend on armies or human power, but on His Spirit. The temple was finished (Ezra 6:15).
Apply it today: Name one task that feels too big for you, and ask God for His help before you take the next step.
Does this mean I should not work hard?
No. Zerubbabel still had to lead, plan and lay the stones. The Bible praises honest work (Colossians 3:23). The verse is about what the work depends on. Your effort matters, but it is not the source of the result. When you lean on God, you can work with peace instead of panic. The apostle Paul worked very hard, yet he said it was God's grace at work in him (1 Corinthians 15:10).
Apply it today: Give your next task your full effort, and say a short prayer for help before you begin.
What is God's Spirit, and how does He help?
The Holy Spirit is God Himself, one with the Father and the Son. Jesus promised His followers that the Spirit would be with them and live in them (John 14:16-17). The Spirit gives wisdom, courage, comfort and strength to do what is right. Anyone who trusts Jesus has the Spirit (Romans 8:9). Jesus also invites us to ask the Father for the Holy Spirit, and He says the Father gives Him gladly (Luke 11:13).
Apply it today: Ask the Father in a short, simple prayer to fill you with His Spirit today.
