“because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.”
In plain words: Everyone who has new life from God wins out over the world's pull, and the way we win is by trusting Jesus.
What 1 John 5:4 means.
Everyone born of God overcomes the world, and our faith is the victory that overcomes it.
Common questions about 1 John 5:4
What does it mean to be 'born of God'?
Being born of God means God gives you new life on the inside. Jesus told a man named Nicodemus that everyone needs to be born again (John 3:3). You can't earn it, and you can't get it from your family or a church building. When a person turns from going their own way and trusts Jesus, God makes them His child (John 1:12-13). It is like a fresh start that God Himself gives. That new life is what John says beats the world.
Apply it today: Tell God in your own words that you want to trust Jesus and follow Him.
What is 'the world' that we are supposed to overcome?
In John's writing, 'the world' does not mean the planet or the people on it. God loves the people in it (John 3:16). It means a way of living that leaves God out, where pride, greed and wanting everything now call the shots (1 John 2:15-17). Overcoming does not mean life has no trouble. Jesus said we will have trouble, but He has already overcome the world (John 16:33). So the victory is that the world's pull does not get the final word over you.
Apply it today: Name one pressure you feel from the world, like comparing yourself to others, and hand it to Jesus in a short prayer today.
How can faith be a victory? Isn't faith just believing something?
Faith means trusting Jesus, not just agreeing with an idea. The next verse, 1 John 5:5, says the one who overcomes is the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God. Your faith is not a big feeling or a perfect record. Its power comes from the One you trust. Jesus died for sin and rose again, so He is strong even when you feel weak. Even small faith rests on a great Savior, and that is why John calls faith the victory.
Apply it today: Read 1 John 5:1-5 slowly once today and notice each time John talks about believing.
