“Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”
In plain words: Even if the biggest, steadiest things in the world were to move, God's faithful love for His people will not walk away, and His promise of peace will not break. The One who says this cares about them deeply.
What Isaiah 54:10 means.
God says mountains may move and hills may shake, but His covenant of peace with His people will not be removed.
Common questions about Isaiah 54:10
What is a covenant of peace?
A covenant is a serious promise that God makes and keeps. In the Bible, peace means more than a calm feeling. The Hebrew word, shalom, means wholeness, being made right with God and with others. So God is promising to stay committed to His people and to make them whole. Earlier in the chapter, He compares this to His promise after Noah's flood, when He swore never to flood the earth that way again [[Isaiah 54:9]]. The promise rests on who God is, not on how well people perform.
Apply it today: Say out loud one promise you have kept to someone, then thank God that He keeps every one of His.
Does this mean nothing hard will ever happen to me?
No. Look at the verse again. It says the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken. Those are word pictures for the scariest shaking life can bring. God does not say the shaking will never come. He says His love will not leave His people while it happens. Jesus spoke the same way when He said we will have trouble in this world, but He has overcome it [[John 16:33]]. Hard times are not proof that God has gone away. The promise is that He stays.
Apply it today: Name one thing in your life that feels shaky today and read Isaiah 54:10 slowly beside it.
Who was God talking to, and does it include me?
God first spoke these words to Israel, His people, after they had suffered through years of exile far from home. They felt forgotten, and He told them He had compassion on them and would not give up. Christians believe this kind of promise reaches its fullest in Jesus, who brought a new covenant through His death and rising again. Jesus invites everyone to come to Him, trust Him, and find rest [[Matthew 11:28-30]]. That invitation is open to you.
Apply it today: Read Matthew 11:28-30 today and notice what Jesus says He is like.
