Common questions about Mark 4:39-40

Did Jesus really calm a storm just by speaking?

Mark tells it as something that really happened. Jesus' friends were in a boat in a fierce storm, and He was asleep. They woke Him up. He spoke to the wind and the sea, and both obeyed at once. The people who saw it were stunned. They asked who this could be, since even wind and waves obeyed Him ([[Mark 4:41]]). The Bible also says the sea belongs to God, and He is the one who calms it ([[Psalm 107:28-30]]). Mark wants us to see that Jesus is more than a good teacher. He has power over creation.

Apply it today: Read Mark 4:35-41 slowly today and notice who is in the boat with the disciples.

Was Jesus angry at His friends for being afraid?

The story does not say He was angry. The disciples called out to Jesus for help, and that was the right thing to do. His question shows they had forgotten who was in the boat with them. Faith simply means trusting Jesus, and even His closest friends were still learning how. He stayed patient with them. Jesus is not keeping score of your trust. He invites you to know Him better, so fear does not get the last word. Your faith may feel small, and He still welcomes you. See the honest prayer in [[Mark 9:24]].

Apply it today: Tell Jesus about one thing you are afraid of, in your own simple words.

Does this mean Jesus will stop every storm in my life?

Mark does not say that. Jesus said we will have trouble in this world, and He also said He has overcome the world ([[John 16:33]]). Hard times do not mean your faith is weak or that God is against you. This story shows that Jesus is Lord over the storm, and that He was in the boat with His friends. God also promises to be with His people when they pass through deep water ([[Isaiah 43:2]]). He may calm the storm, or He may carry you through it. Either way, you are not alone.
