Common questions about Matthew 14:29-31

Why did Peter start to sink?

The passage says Peter was afraid when he saw the strength of the wind. At first he stepped out of the boat because Jesus said, "Come," and he walked toward Jesus. Then he looked at the storm around him, and fear took over. The wind was real, and so was the danger. What changed was where Peter was looking. Notice what he did next. He did not give up. He cried out, "Lord, save me!" It was short and honest, and it was enough (Matthew 14:30).

Apply it today: Read Matthew 14:22-33 today and notice what Jesus does the moment Peter calls for help.

Was Jesus angry when He said, "You of little faith"?

The passage never says Jesus was angry. Look at the order of events. First, Jesus immediately reached out and took hold of Peter. He did not wait, and Peter did not have to earn it. Only after that did Jesus ask, "Why did you doubt?" Faith here means trust. Little faith means small trust, not none. Peter had enough to step out of the boat and enough to cry out for help. Jesus' hand came first, and the question came second (Matthew 14:31).

Apply it today: Think of one small step of trust you can take today, and take it.

What can I do when I feel afraid, like Peter?

Peter's story shows a simple pattern. Fear came, he called out to Jesus, and Jesus caught him. You do not need perfect words or a strong feeling to pray. God's Word invites people to bring their worries to Him because He cares about them (1 Peter 5:7). Philippians 4:6-7 also says to bring everything to God in prayer, and that His peace will guard our hearts and minds. Fear is not the end of the story when we turn toward Jesus.

Apply it today: Say a short, honest prayer today, even just three words like Peter's: "Lord, help me."
