Common questions about Matthew 21:22

Does this mean I get anything I ask for?

No. Jesus is not handing out a blank check. He said this to his friends right after the fig tree withered, to teach them to trust God fully. The rest of the Bible adds more. First John 5:14 says God hears us when we ask in line with what He wants. Even Jesus, in Matthew 26:39, asked for a hard thing to be taken away, then said he wanted the Father's will most. God is a good Father, not a vending machine. We can ask boldly and trust Him with the answer.

Apply it today: Tell God one real need today, and end by saying you trust Him with the answer.

What does it mean to believe when I pray?

Believing means trusting that God is real, that He is good, and that He hears you. It does not mean working up a big feeling or having perfect faith. Jesus taught that even faith as small as a mustard seed matters (Matthew 17:20). In Mark 9:24, a worried father said he believed but needed help with his doubts. Jesus helped him anyway. So come to God as you are, with the trust you have, and ask Him to help it grow.

Apply it today: Say a short, honest prayer today, telling God you trust Him and asking Him to help you trust Him more.

What if I prayed and did not get what I asked for?

That does not mean your faith was too small. The apostle Paul asked the Lord three times to take away a painful struggle, and it stayed (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). God answered him by promising that His grace was enough for him. Sometimes God says yes, sometimes not yet, and sometimes He gives something different from what we asked. Hard things are not proof that you failed. Keep talking to Him. He is a Father who listens, and He cares about you.

Apply it today: Name one prayer you are still waiting on, and hand it back to God again today.
