Common questions about Proverbs 16:9

Does this mean I should not make plans?

No. The verse says the heart plans, and it does not call that bad. Planning is a good thing. Another proverb says careful plans lead to good results [[Proverbs 21:5]]. The verse is about who has the last word. You can choose a direction, think ahead, and work hard. But you cannot control everything that happens on the road. God can. So plan well, and hold your plan with open hands instead of a tight fist.

Apply it today: Write down one goal for this week and say a short prayer over it before you start.

What if my plans fall apart?

That can hurt, and it is okay to feel sad. Plans break for many reasons: things we could not see coming, other people's choices, or a world that is not the way it should be. A broken plan is not always a message, and it is not always a punishment. We do not need to invent a reason. What this verse offers is steady comfort: God is still directing steps, and He is not surprised. Scripture says He holds up the one who trusts Him, even after a stumble [[Psalm 37:23-24]].

Apply it today: Tell God honestly about one plan that did not work out, and ask Him to help you take the next step.

How do I know which steps God wants me to take?

Start with what the Bible says plainly. It tells us to love people, tell the truth, and treat others fairly. For choices the Bible does not spell out, ask God for wisdom, and He promises to give it [[James 1:5]]. Then listen to wise people who know you well. Trust Him with the whole path, even when you can only see the next step [[Proverbs 3:5-6]]. You do not need the whole map. You just need to take the next faithful step.

Apply it today: Ask one wise friend what they see in a choice you are facing, and pray before you decide.
