Common questions about Psalm 121:1-2

Why is the writer looking at the hills?

This was a song for people walking to Jerusalem to worship God. Their road went up through hills, and hills could feel scary. Travelers could worry about danger along the way. So the singer looks up and asks a real question: where will my help come from? Then he answers it right away. The hills are big, but they are not the helper. The God who made them is. It is an honest song, because it starts with a worry and ends with trust.

Apply it today: Name one thing that worries you today, and say out loud that your help comes from the LORD.

Why does it matter that the LORD made heaven and earth?

It tells us how big and capable He is. Everything we can see, like the hills, the sky and the oceans, was made by Him. That means nothing in the world is too big for Him, and nothing is out of His reach. The writer is saying that help does not come from the hills themselves, but from the One who made them. The rest of the psalm goes on to show how closely He watches over His people: [[Psalm 121:3-8]].

Apply it today: Step outside or look out a window, and thank the Maker of the sky for one thing you can see.

Does this mean I should not ask people for help?

No. The psalm says the LORD is the true source of our help, but He often works through people. A doctor, a friend, a counselor or a neighbor can be part of how He cares for us. Looking up to Him does not mean sitting still. It means we start with Him, trust Him, and then take the next wise step. Asking for help is not weak, and it does not mean your trust in God is small.

Apply it today: Reach out to one trusted person about something heavy, and ask God to guide you as you do.
