Common questions about Ecclesiastes 11:6

What does it mean to sow seed?

A seed is a small thing you put in the ground, hoping it grows into something bigger. In this verse, it stands for the work you do and the good things you invest in. That could be a job, a skill, a friendship, kindness to a neighbor, or time with your family. The writer says to start in the morning and keep going into the evening. Farmers back then could not see what the soil would do. They planted anyway. The verse invites you to do the same with the good work in front of you.

Apply it today: Pick two or three small good things, like a task, a phone call, or a kind act, and do them today.

Why keep working if I don't know what will succeed?

Nobody can see the future. The writer says plainly that you do not know which seed will grow, or whether both will. That can feel scary, and it can tempt us to wait for a sure thing. But if you wait for perfect conditions, nothing gets planted. The verse just before this one, Ecclesiastes 11:4, warns about exactly that. Paul gives the other side in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7: people plant and water, but God is the One who makes things grow. You do your part. The results belong to Him.

Apply it today: Write down one thing you have been putting off because it might not work, and take the first small step on it today.

Does this mean I should never rest?

No. The Bible honors rest. In Exodus 20:8-10, God's people are told to set aside a day to rest. This verse is about not giving up. Think of a farmer who keeps sowing after a bad morning, and who spreads the seed around instead of putting all his hope in one spot. Galatians 6:9 says something close: do not get tired of doing good, because in the right time there will be a harvest. Rest well, then get back to planting.

Apply it today: Rest well tonight, then choose one good thing to plant first thing tomorrow morning.
