Common questions about Psalm 90:17

What does "the favor of the Lord" mean?

Favor means kindness and good will. Think of a loving father who looks at his child with a smile, not a frown. Moses is asking God to look kindly on His people and be with them in their work. This kind of favor is not something we earn by being perfect. Just a few lines earlier, in Psalm 90:14, Moses asks God to fill His people with His steady, faithful love. God's favor starts with His love, not with our performance.

Apply it today: Begin your work today by telling God, in your own words, that you want His kindness on it.

Does this mean everything I do will succeed?

No. The Bible never promises that every plan will turn out the way we picture it. Psalm 90 is honest that life is short and often hard (verse 10). Moses is not asking for fame or riches. He is asking that our work would matter and last because God is part of it. Psalm 127:1 says that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders work for nothing. And 1 Corinthians 15:58 says work done for the Lord is never wasted.

Apply it today: Pick one task today and do it with care, trusting that work done for God is never wasted.

What if my work seems small or ordinary?

Moses prays about "the work of our hands," and that means everyday work: cooking, fixing, teaching, caring for a child, serving a customer. Just before this, in Psalm 90:12, he asks God to help us understand how short our days are so we can live wisely. Short days make ordinary work matter. God can make small, faithful work last in ways we may never see. Colossians 3:23 says to work with all your heart, as if working for the Lord.

Apply it today: Thank God for one ordinary thing you do each day, then do it with all your heart.
